Merriam-Webster announced that its word of the year for 2019 is ‘they’. People searched the word 313% more in 2019 than the pervious year. This is attributed mostly to the growing recognition and acceptance of people with nonbinary gender identities. As an immigration attorney who work to serve people from all around the world, it’s essential that we have an open mind to gender identities. Third genders are recognized throughout the world and it is possible that we will have clients who do not identify with a binary gender. One simple way to make our spaces more accepting and welcoming is talk about pronouns.
