Supreme court approved public charge rule changes

On January 27, 2020 the US Supreme Court approved an order to allow the Trump administration to proceed with its new public charge rule. Estimates indicate that the new public charge rule will reduce legal immigration to the USA by hundreds of thousands of people a year. This will lower the labor force growth in the USA and will have a more negative impact on future economic growth than anything positive the Trump administration has done or probably could do in the next years. It is reasonable to be concerned about immigrants or any other group using excessive welfare benefits, that is not the purpose of this public charge rule. Immigrants are already ineligible for major federal public benefits. Instead the purpose is to give immigration officials enormous discretion to deny immigrants green cards if they think that they might use public benefits for 12 months within a future 36-month period. There is no precedent for this in the history of US law.
