Temporary Protected Status for Afghanistan

On Wednesday March 16, 2022 the Biden administration offered Afghanis living in the USA since March 15, 2022 temporary protected status for 18 months.

It is estimated that this temporary protected status program could benefit 76,000 Afghanis currently in the USA who came as refugees since the USA military’s summer 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Temporary protected status does not grant permanent residency in the USA, and it only applies to people already in the USA and not to new arrivals.

Temporary protected status gives beneficiaries humanitarian protection from deportation.
